FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling offers an approach to difficulties that are more problem focused and suited to shorter-term therapy.
Psychotherapy is for longer-term therapy where issues are more complex and require an in-depth look at the cause of difficulty and distress.
Training requirements are different in that a qualified psychotherapist has undergone personal therapy, worked within mental health care settings and is able to work with issues such as Personality Disorders.
My training, qualifications and experience enable me to offer counselling and psychotherapy services.

There seems to be so many models of counselling and psychotherapy, how do I choose?

Research has shown that the relationship with your therapist is much more important than the type of model practiced. In other words it is very important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with.
I incorporate the unique approach of Transactional Analysis which incorporates Psychodynamic, Humanistic and CBT models.

What else should I look for in finding a counsellor or therapist?

For assurance of professional standards and ethical practice you should look for someone registered with one of the major associations such as UKCP or BACP.
I am registered with BACP and also the Metanoia Institute and European Association of Transactional Analysis (EATA).

What about my privacy?

Sessions are confidential within the terms of the BACP ethical framework. I ensure a safe, confidential space in which to explore your difficulties.
Data protection law applies to all therapists, therapists should be registered with the ICO and provide their privacy policy on commencement of therapy.
I am a member of the ICO and have a privacy policy in place.

How long does it take?

Length of therapy depends on what you want and issues to be addressed. For problem focused issues Solution Focused Brief therapy and Cognitive Behavioural approaches have been shown to be helpful in 6 - 12 sessions. However, for deeper change that will endure the process may take much longer.
